What to Do in case of Earthquake in Japan?

1st September is “Disaster Prevention Day ( 防災の日/ぼうさいのひ ) ” in Japan. It’s not a holiday but commemorating the Great Kanto Earthquake – the worst ever earthquake that struck Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923, and annual earthquake/fire drills are conducted nationwide on that day.

Despite decades of research, earthquake is unpredictable and it may occur anytime as long as you are in Japan. In fact, small, imperceptible shakes are recorded at least 2-3 times/daily. Don’t worry too much but be prepare what to do should you encounter sudden shake :-

What to Do/Don’t in case of earthquake?

  1. STAY low, COVER your head,and HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
  2. If you are indoors, get under a desk, or stay against a wall. Stay away from windows. If you are outdoors, get into the open.
  3. Once the shaking stops, move away from the building. Do NOT use lift.  Look for safety evacuation area, or nearby park or school garden.
  4. Monitor accurate information from local authorities. Useful webpage: Japan Meteorological Agency (earthquake information in English).
  5. Refrain from making unnecessary calls to save your mobile battery.

Possible affects:

  1. Power/Water/Gas Outages
  2. Limited mobile/internet connectivity
  3. Damage to Transportation systems
